Tsunamis are one of the deadliest natural disasters that have ever occurred on earth. These large waves are usually produced by underwater shifts caused by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or landslides. The most recent tsunami that rocked the world occurred recently, reminding us of the powerful power of nature and its far-reaching impact. One of the latest tsunamis that caught the world’s attention was the one that occurred in the Indian Ocean region after an earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale was centered near the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. The earthquake that occurred on October 14 2023 caused tsunami waves as high as 3 meters in several coastal areas. Even though a tsunami warning was issued by the BMKG (Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency), several areas still experienced significant damage. In the West Coast area of Sumatra, residents reported roaring sounds before the waves arrived. This incident reminded the world of the larger 2004 tsunami, also caused by plate shifts in the same area. After the incident, many countries developed early warning systems to reduce the risk of future fatalities. Not only in Indonesia, similar tsunamis also hit other areas. Japan, with a long history of natural disasters, is again on alert after active plate movements in the Pacific Ocean created waves that were felt all the way to the east coast. The Japanese government actively involves the public in simulations and education about handling when a tsunami occurs. This approach aims to increase public awareness to reduce risks when a disaster strikes. The impact of the tsunami included damage to infrastructure, houses and public facilities. Apart from that, tsunamis also result in the loss of important natural resources and marine ecosystems. In many cases, an assessment is carried out immediately to determine the economic losses incurred. Disaster mitigation systems are becoming increasingly important in facing this challenge. Many countries are now investing in early detection technology. For example, the use of marine buoys equipped with sensors can provide accurate information to predict the strength and direction of waves. The importance of educating the public about emergency measures and creating clear evacuation plans cannot be ignored. Research shows that communities that are prepared for disasters tend to have lower casualty rates than those that are not. The community needs to be involved in these programs to be more alert. Statistics show an increase in the frequency of tsunami events in recent years. Data from the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) states that more than 230,000 people lost their lives due to tsunamis in one decade. With climate change and increasing volcanic activity, the threat of tsunamis will continue to exist. As technology advances, hopes for reducing the risk of future tsunamis are growing. Continuous research on the behavior of tsunami waves and their impact on the environment and humans is very crucial. International collaboration is also needed, considering that tsunamis do not recognize national borders. New discoveries in the fields of seismology and oceanography could be a step forward in comprehensively addressing this challenge. With higher awareness, good education and adequate technology, the hope is that the death toll from tsunamis can be minimized and society will be better prepared to face this disaster in the future.
